Being fortunate enough to grow up in northern B.C. influenced my connection to Mother Nature. As I continue to explore the principles and philosophy of Osteopathy, I am continually amazed at the incredible ‘ecology’ our bodies! My initial interest in the health care industry began with Kinesiology, which I studied while continuing a 20-year passion of competitive speed skating. Overcoming several sports injuries became my inspiration to help others through rehabilitative strengthening and movement. I gained a decade of invaluable experience from a diverse clientele as a Kinesiologist. Through holistic collaboration with health care professionals, I discovered the Canadian College of Osteopathy, where I completed a 5-year intensive, yet rewarding program. As a dedicated lifelong student, I remain open to growth with ongoing curiosity about this world. Along my path so far, I have had opportunities with continuing and post-graduate education to broaden my anatomical, bio-mechanical and physiological knowledge. Examples of complementary modalities, such as Polarity Therapy, have incorporated subtle energies, while an interest in pediatrics inspired the study of retained primitive reflexes in relation to brain function.Outside of Osteopathy, I make sure to appreciate the endless beauty of this Okanagan paradise called Vernon. I look forward to assisting others with their health journey to be able to enjoy this lifestyle as much as I do!

What is osteopathy?

‘The role of the osteopath is to facilitate the body’s self-healing process’ (~A.T. Still)Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine which was developed in 1874 by an American doctor and surgeon, Andrew Taylor Still.
An osteopathic practitioner's primary goal is to facilitate anatomical structures to their optimal positioning, which restores their mobility and functional integrity. One of the main concepts in Osteopathy, as taught by Dr. Still, is that the body has an inherent ability to heal and restore itself.
‘Nature has supplied her own forces, and man has only to find and apply them’ (~A.T. Still)Dr. Still taught Osteopathy as an expression of Nature, with a focus on optimizing the arterial, venous, lymphatic and neurotrophic pathways to the anatomical structures.‘The science of osteopathy is founded upon a knowledge of the fact that man is a compound of body, mind, and spirit’ (~A.T. Still)Dr. Still’s exposure to Native American shamanic practices greatly influenced his understanding of how mental, emotional and spiritual well-being impacted overall health.Over 150 years later, modern-day traditional Osteopathy has continued to provide a unique holistic approach which acknowledges the interconnectedness of our being.

WHAT IS an Osteopathic treatment
&
who is Osteopathy for?

An osteopathic practitioner uses their extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, combined with precise palpation to evaluate for primary causes of dysfunction, by which they tailor a treatment plan.
Goals of the treatment plan are to restore mobility and therefore circulation, as well to integrate all systems of the body in order to facilitate self-regulation for the healing process.
Some examples of reasons which patients of any age can see an osteopathic practitioner for may include any history of:- acute/chronic pain,
- trauma,
- scar tissue (e.g. post surgery),
- headaches,
- concussions,
- TMJ pain,
- digestive challenges,
- menstrual challenges,
- repetitive strain
Osteopathy can also assist in maintenance of overall health and relaxation, and complements all healthcare modalities. The initial assessment begins with a detailed interview to review the patient’s health history forms. The interview allows the patient to communicate all of their health goals and symptoms, whether in the present or past.
Furthermore, an in-depth timeline analysis may reveal unidentified influences, particularly if symptoms arrived insidiously. This may include past events, such injuries, traumas, surgeries, illnesses, stressors and/or repetitive strain.
A complete and holistic analysis of the musculo-skeletal, fasciae, visceral/organic, circulatory, neurological and cranial systems is performed, as any or all could have an influence on the current symptom(s). An osteopathic practitioner considers the interconnections of all aspects of the being, as reflected from Nature's forces on the anatomy in embryology.
